Guys-the roux is NOT supposed to be like some heavy gravy. This I say because what we had at Sunset Station was not right, in fact, it was just wrong. Spend some time behind the counter with the chefs at the steam kettles of the gumbo, pan roasts, Jambalaya, etc. Word to the wise for Sunset Station cooks, chefs: Spend ½ a day and go over to the Palace Station. One, it was indeed right in the hotel we were staying at, and it is a sister company of all the “Station” hotels. A couple of reasons for making this venture. Īnyhow, while staying at the Sunset Station this past weekend, we decided to try their version of the Oyster Bar. Many travelers and most locals know about the Oyster Bar at the Palace Station. Worth the visit but some dishes stand out more than others. The previous two main dishes were significantly better than these two which were the Bouillabaisse and the mixed Sunset pan roast. The clam chowder is to my liking with a thicker gravy type base not runny and big chunks of clams boasting with flavor. The shrimp they use are huge and full of flavor on their own. Just never going to make a great dish that way. That’s when it was made clear the heat they generate is just with crushed pepper flakes. Wife ordered side of shrimp and had them cook in what they said was the base for heat 10/10.

Just kind of a raw tomato base with not a lot of flavor. The linguine dish wasn’t fantastic either.

Each item has its regular flavor but the dish just doesn’t come together. The way the shrimp are cooked in it doesn’t give them a chance to absorb any of the flavor and the same with the potatoes and sausage and yet the corn was turned to mush. Decent flavor but just not a lot going on. The seafood broil was not my favorite of the main dishes I had. I’d encourage using the raw horseradish worth them. Raw oysters were fine but the cooked we’re off the charts in flavor. Today we had the Cesar salad and clam chowder along with a taster of the raw and cooked oysters. Ambiance is nice if you have a booth to the back of the waterfall otherwise a little crowded and noisy. This location is at the Sunset station casino.
